Understanding depression is like trying to understand why millennials love Chipotle or why boys are far less mature than girls. Sometimes there isn't much reason and sometimes there are. For some people however, it can be said that their depression is more like a deep sadness. While still unbearable it is not the same experience that someone who lives with depression will have to cope with  and here's why.

Anyone who has ever experienced depression will probably tell you that it is one of the most painful emotional and spiritual torture that one could endure. The worst part about it is that you are the torturer, the reason for your pain, and as much as you try, you remain in the sunken place, a prisoner of your own mind and body.

Neurology speaking the part of your brain that releases Serotonin, the happy endorphin, is super low. For example, you could be surrounded by a beautiful and thrilling experience but your brain won't allow you to feel how wonderful it all is.

So how does one begin the process of overcoming depression?

1. It typically helps to be around family members or supportive friends who are educated on depression (and if they are not, there's no time like the present to break the stigma and have a conversation about what you're going through). It always nice to have someone in your corner who can make you smile. You shouldn't feel alone.

2. Watch your favorite movies!
Depression has a eerie way of letting you forget who you are. There will be days when you won't want to get out of bed and that's ok. This is the time you need to take to reconnect with yourself and begin healing.

3. Doing some exercises are a good way to be active while activating and heightening your serotonin levels. Try doing some yoga to get your mind, body, and spirit connected. Yoga is a great way to balance your breathing and align your chakras or energy centers. Movement in general is a beautiful and serene way to feel alive and like yourself again.

4. Begin a healthy diet.
Eating more fruits can really boost your morale. You can start slowly by just eating a bowl of strawberries for lunch or having a whole apple in the morning for breakfast. I found this helped me the most in my recovery. Eating healthier food options come with tons of benefits that will boost your emotional and spiritual state, while also protecting and strengthening your body's immune system.

5. Take a short walk around your neighborhood, local park, or your back yard. Anywhere where you feel safe and at peace. If you become prone to noises or unwanted thoughts in your head, having a walk outside in nature is an amazing way to find inner peace. I suggest doing this midday or on your lunch break at work. Just try to let go off all your worries, the best thing about doing these walks is that it reminds you how much you're not alone and there's a whole world of people out there. You have so much to live for, new experiences and love.

6. Listening to music.
Whether you're a R&B fan or a lover of country music, listening to your favorite artist will surely have you feeling right. Allow whatever emotions trapped within your subconscious to rise to the surface for cleansing. Sing along and let that spirit out, even if you're not the best singer, this is your time. Don't spend anymore time consumed with the opinions of others and only focus on the positive truths of yourself.

7. Meditate.
Meditation allows you to connect with your higher self. Through this practice you will find peace and serenity from within. It pulls you out of the matrix of the world and into the rhythm of the universe.

8. Explore your creativity.
Write a journal entry or poem. Draw a picture or paint something inspired. Any medium that allows you to transform your experience into something magical are all ways in which you are overcoming your depression.

9. Go somewhere spiritual.
This could be your family church, mosque, or any temple that provides a sacred space for the Divine Oneness. Trust me, the energy of places like these will surely lift your spirits and provide a loving support group of people who want to help.
